Meredith's Birth Story

I scheduled an induction for 38 weeks due to the fact that I was going to have to be induced anyway if I made it to 39 weeks for (long and complicated) medical reasons. The timing of 38 weeks worked well with the big kids' schedules and I could plan to have my mom in town to help (very important when you already have 2 little kids!). Mike and I headed to Presby Dallas for a 6:00am scheduled induction the morning of Thursday, June 9th (so strange going to an "appointment" to have a baby!). We got checked in and situated and by about 8:30am they started my pitocin. I started at 3cm, 50% effaced and -1 station, so I was already well on my way when we arrived at the hospital. I hung out and listened to music while Mike read a book. The contractions were painful, but I was managing fine so I didn't ask for the epidural (yet!)

Meanwhile, my mom took Madeline to cheer camp and hung out with Grant. I told my OB that the baby sitter was coming to the house to watch Grant at 12 noon so my mom and Madeline could come to the hospital for the birth. Knowing this, she came back in to check me about 11:30am -- at which point I was 4cm -- and break my water (still didn't have the epidural at this point -- not such a great idea in hidnsight). The OB said if she had broken my water any earlier my mom and Madeline would not have made it in time for the birth! After she broke my water I got the epidural and settled in -- still hanging out/listening to my ipod.

About 1:00 the doctor came back in to check on me - and I was 10 cm. My mom and Madeline still had not arrived at the hospital so my doctor went back to her office for a little while to give them a chance to get to the hospital. Mom and Maddie finally arrived about 1:30pm and the doctor came back in around 1:40. The nurse set everything up for delivery and 4 pushes later sweet Meredith entered the world at 1:45pm! She weighed 7 pounds, 1 ounce and was so tiny and sweet. Madeline was there for the delivery - and seemed pretty impressed with the whole thing (later she told me that I "peed the baby out" - ha!). I know she felt so special because she got to watch her baby sister being born (talk about a science lesson!!). After they moved my to the recovery room - everyone left and went home for dinner. They all came back, with Grant, later that night to visit and so Grant could meet his baby sister.

Life with three is CRAZY but great. We feel so blessed to have three beautiful, healthy children! Welcome to the world Meredith Ann! We love you!
